What to look for in a Twilio Lookup alternative
Most teams considering alternatives to Twilio Lookup for fraud and KYC work are looking for one or more of the following: simpler pricing (Twilio charges separately for each data type), faster access to SIM swap detection (Twilio's SIM swap product requires a sales conversation and its own carrier registration), coverage in specific markets, or a standalone tool rather than a feature of a broader communications platform.
The signals that matter for fraud-focused carrier lookups are carrier, number type (specifically the mobile vs VoIP distinction), active status, and increasingly SIM swap detection. Format validation alone is not sufficient for fraud prevention.
The options
Telebase
SIM swap detection with carrier, country, number type and active status in a single API call. €0.20 per check, flat (€200 per 1,000 checks), no tiers, no add-on configuration. SIM swap detection is live in the UK and Germany, with more markets on the way, and no separate contract required. New accounts start in the sandbox with test keys, which are never charged. Balance is topped up by invoice, with no annual commitment. Vonage Number Insight
Vonage Number Insight is a three-tier product: Basic (free, format validation), Standard (carrier and number type, per-lookup fee, country-variable pricing), and Advanced (adds live active status check, higher per-lookup fee). SIM swap is not part of the Number Insight self-serve product.
Vonage has announced that Number Insight will be sunset on 4 February 2027. The replacement product is Vonage Identity Insights, a single-call API that consolidates carrier data, SIM swap detection and subscriber match. Teams evaluating Vonage should assess against Identity Insights rather than Number Insight if they expect to be in production beyond early 2027.
Best for: teams already using Vonage's communications APIs who want to keep vendors consolidated, or who operate in markets where Vonage has strong carrier coverage.
Abstract API, NumVerify and similar
A range of generic phone validation APIs offer carrier lookup and number type detection at low prices, often with free tiers. These tools typically return format validation, basic carrier information, and a line type signal. Active status (whether the number is currently reachable on the network) is usually not available, and SIM swap detection is not part of any generic validation tool in this category.
Best for: contact list cleaning, form validation and deliverability optimisation where fraud detection is not the primary goal. Not recommended as a primary fraud signal source because active status and SIM swap are absent.
Direct carrier integration via GSMA Open Gateway / CAMARA
The GSMA Open Gateway and CAMARA API standards define how carriers expose network signals to developers, including number verify, device status and SIM swap. Several MNOs in the UK, Germany, Netherlands and France now publish CAMARA-standard APIs. Integrating directly gives the most current carrier data with no intermediary.
The trade-off is integration complexity: you need a separate agreement and API connection per carrier, which means multiple integrations for multi-market coverage. An aggregator like Telebase handles the carrier registration layer so you query one endpoint rather than one per market.
Best for: large platforms with dedicated engineering resource that need the absolute freshest data and are willing to manage per-carrier integrations.
Twilio Lookup: where it makes sense to stay
Twilio Lookup remains a strong choice if: you already use Twilio for SMS delivery or OTP and want shared authentication and billing; you run very high query volumes and benefit from Twilio's volume-tiered pricing on line status (as low as $0.00385 per query at 10 million+); or you only need carrier and number type without active status or SIM swap.

SIM swap detection vs line-type lookup vs identity match
These answer three different questions, not three names for the same check. Line-type lookup (also called carrier lookup) answers what kind of number this is right now: which carrier holds it, which country it is registered in, whether it is mobile, landline or VoIP, and whether it is currently reachable on the network. SIM swap detection answers a different question: has control of this number recently moved to a new SIM, the signal fraud teams use to catch account takeover around a login, password reset or high-value transaction. Identity match, sometimes called subscriber match, is different again: it checks whether a name, address or date of birth supplied by a user matches the record the carrier holds for that number, an identity-verification check rather than a network signal.
