What are MCC and MNC?

The Mobile Country Code (MCC) is a three-digit number assigned by the ITU to identify the country a mobile network operates in. The Mobile Network Code (MNC) is a two or three-digit number that identifies the specific network operator within that country. Together, MCC and MNC uniquely identify a carrier worldwide.

These codes appear inside IMSI numbers (the first five or six digits) and ICCID serial numbers on SIM cards. They are also used in network signalling, roaming agreements and regulatory filings.

How MCC/MNC relates to carrier lookup

When a carrier lookup API returns a carrier name for a phone number, it is resolving the network identity behind that number. The MCC/MNC pair is the underlying standard the industry uses to identify that network. Knowing the MCC/MNC can help you verify that a carrier name in an API response maps to the expected operator, or cross-reference results across different providers.
